A job interview involves the process of assessing the list of required skills for the role in comparison with a candidate’s key skills as well as general profile and characteristics. In this post, we shall be turning the tables and looking at the top skills that are required to land a job as a Human Resource Professional and subsequently excel in the profession.
So without further ado, here are the skills you should gain if you are looking for a long-term career in Human Resources:
- Discretion and High Ethical Inclination
Hr Professionals are inarguably one of the keepers of sacred company information and it is required that they know the sort of information to make public and those to keep restricted. Also, one has to ensure that the policies of the organization and other regulations are followed by the employees. You also need to ensure that the top management are not breaching any laws and are acting fair towards employees.
This therefore, requires deep discretion and a deeper understanding of ethics of the organization as well as the general HR Profession. To have a deep knowledge of global HR best practices and ethics, click here
To excel as a HR Professional, you have to develop high organizational skills in relation to file-keeping, time management, and even in relation to personal life as it will inadvertently influence your professional productivity.
Even though communication is a key skill that every individual in the workplace has to possess, it is especially necessary for HR professionals. This is because they have to learn different types of communication styles; to top management, to managers, employees in different skill and experience grades, and even to potential employees. This communication has to then be done either formally (writing and face-to-face meetings), or/and informally (social media).
Hence the need for them to learn how to address senior management professionally and not deferentially, and to communicate with other employees respectfully and not condescendingly.
This skill cannot be overemphasized as a prerequisite for HR Professionals because one of their most important responsibilities is helping different parties reaching a compromise. From top talents that might be potential employees to helping find a middle ground in general meetings when there are opposing views, right down to even negotiating leave periods, HR Professionals are the masters of compromise and to become a high-flyer, you have to become a ‘sage’ at negotiation.
- Multitasking and Objectivity
Another skill a HR professional has to develop to stay ahead is the ability to multitask and set priorities. There are so many things to be dealt with by a HR Professional in a day that it is easy to get lost in it all and be left feeling unfulfilled at the end of the day, hence the need to learn this skill.
Furthermore, you have to learn how to balance working for both sides of the organization (top management and employees) to ensure that they are satisfied. There are situations that are tricky where you might be left in the middle of upholding the organization’s values and culture or cutting an employee some slack. This is where you must be objective and apply tact when coming to a resolution. You must never be seen as playing for the other side at the expense of the other.
- Conflict Management
In case you do not know, the workplace is not an arena where like-minded people who take selfies all day and have pizza for breakfast, gather. Therefore, as a HR Professional, you must learn to look for creative ways to ensure that people work together (at least civilly) to lead to high productivity.
- Change Management
Things happen, companies restructure and have to let some people go and redefine the roles of others. It is the role of HR to ensure that even though these changes are completely understood and accepted in the organization, regardless of how rocky and uncomfortable it might be.
So, there we have it, 7 important skills that must be possessed by all HR Professionals to ensure that they not only get great jobs but also keep those jobs and become high-flyers!
